03 _3. Backseat Limo

This is an audio for the Active Listening tasks (as directed by Sam).

There are a few things to remember about these audios: 

  1. Don’t do more than 30 seconds at a time
  2. Only listen to it once. In the parts you have trouble understanding, listen to them again and:
    1. Count the words in the sentencees
    2. Write down the words you hear and use your grammatical and lexical knowledge to guess the words that are missing 
    3. Make note of any words that have features of connected speech and identify what happened and why you didn’t understand
    4. Say those words out loud to yourself in the same way the audio said them: get used to hearing them 
  3. Make note of the parts you missed and bring them to class; try to figure out why you missed them or didn’t hear them correctly

First transcribe the audio as usual then use the transcript to check your work … or as Sam tells you. Good luck!

[00:00:00] Female Speaker: I had a dream. I was in the backseat of your limousine and the phone rang. [phone rings]

[00:00:05] Female Speaker: I picked it up. Hello.

[00:00:08] Charlie: Hey, how’re you doing, beautiful?

[00:00:10] Female Speaker: It was you.

[00:00:11] Charlie: Me? What did I say?

[00:00:13] Female Speaker: You said, “Hey, how’re you doing, beautiful?”

[00:00:16] Charlie: [laughs] I said that?

[00:00:17] Female Speaker: And then you said–

[phone rings]

[00:00:19] Charlie: Hang on, I got another call.

[00:00:21] Female Speaker: I could hear you answer the phone.

[00:00:23] Charlie: Hello.

[00:00:24] Charlisse: It’s me, Charlisse.

[00:00:25] Female Speaker: It was her.

[00:00:27] Charlie: It was who?

[00:00:28] Female Speaker: You know who.

[00:00:29] Charlisse: When am I going to see you?

[00:00:31] Female Speaker: See? That’s what I meant.

[00:00:33] Charlie: But-but it was a dream.

[00:00:34] Female Speaker: I could hear everything.

[00:00:37] Charlie: Listen, babe, my wife’s watching me. I’m walking on eggshells here.

[00:00:40] Charlisse: Well, leave her. You said you would.

[00:00:43] Charlie: I told you, it’s the kids. When they’re a little older, you know?

[00:00:46] Female Speaker: So, what do you have to say about that?

[00:00:50] Charlie: Well, [chuckles] I mean, it was your dream.

[phone rings]

[00:00:53] Charlie: Listen, babe, I got another call.

[00:00:55] Charlisse: Charlie, wait. Please don’t–

[00:00:56] Charlie: That was a close shave.

[phone rings]
