02 _2. Sappy Love Stories

This is an audio for the Active Listening tasks (as directed by Sam).

There are a few things to remember about these audios:

  1. Don’t do more than 30 seconds at a time
  2. Only listen to it once. In the parts you have trouble understanding, listen to them again and:
    1. Count the words in the sentencees
    2. Write down the words you hear and use your grammatical and lexical knowledge to guess the words that are missing
    3. Make note of any words that have features of connected speech and identify what happened and why you didn’t understand
    4. Say those words out loud to yourself in the same way the audio said them: get used to hearing them
  3. Make note of the parts you missed and bring them to class; try to figure out why you missed them or didn’t hear them correctly

First transcribe the audio as usual then use the transcript to check your work … or as Sam tells you. Good luck!

[00:00:00] Speaker 1: I dreamt I had a job writing sappy love storeys four a romance magazine.

[00:00:04] Speaker 2: What was the magazine?

[00:00:06] Speaker 1: True Sappy Love Storey.

[00:00:07] Speaker 2: But the storeys weren’t true?

[00:00:09] Speaker 1: They were. That was the hard part. I had to listen to women and write their storey.

[00:00:14] Speaker 2: That doesn’t sound so bad.

[00:00:15] Speaker 1: No, but the storeys were sad.

[00:00:17] Speaker 2: Like what?

[00:00:18] Speaker 1: Well, there was this girl who kept falling in love with guys and then finding out they were married.

[00:00:22] Speaker 2: [chuckles] That happens.

[00:00:23] Speaker 1: So I’m listening to this woman and she’s describing a man she had an affair with and I’m thinking, “I know this guy.”

[00:00:29] Speaker 2: Oh yeah?

[00:00:30] Speaker 1: Yeah. It’s someone you know, too.

[00:00:32] Speaker 2: I do?

[00:00:33] Speaker 1: Yeah.

[00:00:33] Speaker 2: Who?

[00:00:34] Speaker 1: You.

[00:00:35] Speaker 2: What?

[00:00:35] Speaker 1: Yeah.

[00:00:36] Speaker 2: No, wait. I swear. I have never cheated on my wife.

[00:00:40] Speaker 1: What about in your dreams?

[00:00:41] Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean, all guys do that, but that’s different.

[00:00:44] Speaker 1: You really broke her heart.

[00:00:46] Speaker 2: Wait, wait. It was your dream. It wasn’t mine.

[00:00:49] Speaker 1: But I had to write the storey, and not only that, I’m stuck down there in Mexico.

[00:00:53] Speaker 2: What were you doing there?

[00:00:55] Speaker 1: Interviewing the woman, whose heart you broke.

[00:00:58] Speaker 2: She’s Spanish?

[00:00:58] Speaker 1: Her name was Chiquita. What do you think?

[00:01:00] Speaker 2: I knew a Carmen once.

[00:01:02] Speaker 1: Don’t get me started on her.

[00:01:03] Speaker 2: What?

[00:01:04] Speaker 1: You were two-timing Carmen with Chiquita.

[00:01:07] Speaker 2: Wait, why am I in your dreams?

[00:01:09] Speaker 1: That’s what I wanted to know, and I’m the one stuck in Tijuana, writing your trail of two-timing sappy love storey.

[00:01:16] Speaker 2: This is absurd.

[00:01:17] Speaker 1: Well, that’s what I said.

[00:01:18] Speaker 2: So, did it have a happy ending?

[00:01:21] Speaker 1: Of course.

[00:01:22] Speaker 2: Really?

[00:01:23] Speaker 1: Yeah. I woke up.

[silence]
